Why long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)?
LARC methods — the Nexplanon arm implant and intrauterine devices (IUDs) — are the most effective reversible birth control available, preventing more than 99% of pregnancies. Once placed, they work for years without daily attention, and fertility returns quickly after removal.
Nexplanon arm implant
Nexplanon is a small, flexible rod placed just under the skin of the inner upper arm. It releases etonogestrel, a progestin that prevents ovulation, and it is FDA-approved for up to three years. Insertion takes a few minutes after numbing the skin, and removal is equally quick.
The most common side effect is a change in bleeding patterns — some women have light or no periods, while others have irregular spotting. Counseling on what to expect helps you decide if that trade-off works for you.
IUD options
Hormonal IUDs release a low dose of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus. They thicken cervical mucus, thin the uterine lining, and often reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps significantly — making them useful for heavy periods as well as contraception. Depending on the brand, they last three to eight years.
The copper IUD is hormone-free and can last ten years or longer. It prevents fertilization through a local effect of copper. Periods may be heavier or crampier, especially early on. It can also be used as highly effective emergency contraception within five days of unprotected sex.
- Hormonal IUDs: lighter periods, 3–8 years
- Copper IUD: hormone-free, 10+ years
- Nexplanon: arm implant, up to 3 years
Counseling and comfort
Choosing between methods depends on your bleeding preferences, desire to avoid hormones, timeline for pregnancy, medical history and comfort with the placement process. Pain management options for IUD placement are discussed openly beforehand, because your comfort and consent matter. JennWell provides thorough counseling and coordinates placement as appropriate for your situation.
Removal and return to fertility
Implants and IUDs can be removed anytime, for any reason. Fertility typically returns within weeks, making LARC a strong option even for women who plan to become pregnant in the next year or two.
Preparing for your visit
Coming prepared helps you get the most from an appointment about long-acting birth control. Think about what matters most: lighter periods, avoiding hormones, how long you want protection, and when you might want a pregnancy. Note your current method and the date of your last period, since placement timing and backup contraception depend on it. Ask about pain-control options ahead of time and plan a relaxed rest of the day after IUD placement. Bring your insurance information, as coverage for devices varies.
