Why lab testing matters
Symptoms like fatigue, weight change, hair thinning, poor sleep and low mood can come from many sources: thyroid disease, anemia, insulin resistance, vitamin deficiencies, or hormonal transitions. Thoughtful lab testing helps separate causes and catch silent risks such as prediabetes or high cholesterol before they cause problems.
At JennWell, labs are chosen based on your history and symptoms rather than a one-size-fits-all panel, and every result is reviewed with you in plain language.
Common preventive labs
A typical preventive work-up may include several core tests, with additional testing based on your concerns.
- Complete blood count (CBC) for anemia
- Comprehensive metabolic panel for kidney and liver health
- Lipid panel
- Hemoglobin A1c and fasting glucose
- TSH and thyroid hormones
- Ferritin and iron studies
- Vitamin D and B12
Hormone testing — when it helps
Hormone labs are useful in specific situations: evaluating PCOS (testosterone, DHEA-S, LH/FSH), irregular or absent periods (prolactin, FSH, estradiol), suspected early menopause, or monitoring certain therapies. In typical perimenopause, however, hormone levels fluctuate so much that a single test often does not change treatment. Knowing when not to test is as important as knowing when to test.
Iron and thyroid: often-missed culprits
Heavy periods are one of the most common causes of iron deficiency in women, leading to fatigue, hair shedding, restless legs and shortness of breath — sometimes even before anemia shows on a CBC. Ferritin helps detect low iron stores early. Thyroid disorders are also much more common in women and can mimic perimenopause, depression or PCOS.
From results to a plan
Lab numbers only matter in context. Your results are compared with your symptoms, history and prior values to build a clear plan — whether that is iron replacement, thyroid treatment, metabolic changes, or simply reassurance and a schedule for rechecking.
Preparing for your visit
Coming prepared helps you get the most from an appointment about lab testing. Bring prior results so trends can be compared, and list every medication and supplement — biotin in particular can interfere with thyroid and hormone tests and is often paused for a few days beforehand. Ask whether you need to fast. Jot down symptoms you hope the labs will explain, such as fatigue, hair shedding, cold intolerance or heavy periods, so testing is targeted. Lab orders can be drawn locally, and results are reviewed with you in plain language along with the next steps they point to.
