Botox, Dysport & Xeomin for Forehead Lines, 11s & Crow's Feet

How neuromodulators soften dynamic wrinkles, how the three leading brands compare, and what to expect before and after treatment.

Written & reviewed by Jennifer Neilan, WHNP

Dynamic vs. static wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles form when facial muscles contract — raising your brows, frowning, or squinting when you smile. Over years, repeated folding etches those lines into the skin so they remain even at rest (static wrinkles). Neuromodulators temporarily relax targeted muscles, softening dynamic lines and helping prevent them from deepening.

The most commonly treated areas are horizontal forehead lines, the vertical "11s" between the brows (glabellar lines), and crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes.

Botox vs. Dysport vs. Xeomin

All three are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A products that work the same way: blocking the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract. Differences are subtle. Dysport may spread slightly more and sometimes kicks in a day or two sooner, which can suit broader areas like the forehead. Xeomin is a "naked" formulation without accessory proteins. Botox has the longest track record.

Units are not interchangeable between brands, so dosing is product-specific. During your consultation, the brand and dose are matched to your anatomy, muscle strength and goals.

  • Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA)
  • Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)
  • Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA)

Your treatment visit

Your visit starts with a health history and facial assessment while you make expressions, so injection points can be mapped to how your muscles actually move. The skin is cleansed, and a series of tiny injections are placed with a very fine needle. Treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Results begin to appear in three to five days and reach full effect at about two weeks. A follow-up check at two weeks allows small adjustments if needed. Results typically last three to four months.

Aftercare

Stay upright for four hours, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas, and skip strenuous exercise, saunas and facials for the rest of the day. Mild redness or small bumps fade within minutes to hours; minor bruising is possible. A rare temporary side effect is eyelid or brow heaviness, which is minimized by careful placement and conservative dosing.

Who should not be treated

Neuromodulators are not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in people with certain neuromuscular disorders or an allergy to product ingredients. A complete medical review — something a women's health nurse practitioner does as second nature — is part of every aesthetic visit.

Preparing for your visit

Coming prepared helps you get the most from an appointment about neuromodulator treatment. Arrive with a clean face if possible, and let us know if you have had neuromodulators before — which brand, how many units, and how long results lasted. If medically appropriate, avoiding alcohol and non-essential blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil for a few days beforehand may reduce bruising. Plan treatment at least two weeks before a big event so results have fully settled.
