Masseter Botox for Jaw Clenching, TMJ Tension & Jawline Slimming

Using neuromodulators in the masseter muscles to reduce clenching and grinding-related tension and soften a square jaw.

The masseter muscle

The masseters are the powerful chewing muscles at the angle of your jaw. Chronic clenching or grinding, often during sleep or stress, can enlarge these muscles and contribute to jaw soreness, tension headaches, tooth wear and a wider, more square lower face.

Injecting a neuromodulator into the masseter reduces the force of contraction without affecting your ability to talk, smile, or chew normally. Many patients report less morning jaw tightness and fewer tension headaches.

Who may benefit

Masseter treatment may help women who wake with a tired or sore jaw, have been told by a dentist that they grind their teeth, experience temple or jaw tension headaches, or want a softer, more tapered jawline. It is considered an off-label use for bruxism and TMJ-related symptoms, and it complements — but does not replace — dental night guards and evaluation for structural joint problems.

  • Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • TMJ-related muscle tension
  • Tension headaches originating in the jaw
  • Square or wide lower face

What treatment involves

After assessing the muscle as you clench, several injections are placed in each masseter, avoiding nearby structures. The visit takes about 15 minutes. Because the masseter is a large muscle, doses are higher than in the forehead.

Tension relief often begins within one to two weeks. Visible jawline slimming develops gradually over six to eight weeks as the muscle relaxes and decreases in bulk. Effects usually last three to six months, and with repeat treatment the muscle may stay smaller longer.

Side effects and safety

Temporary tenderness or bruising at injection sites is common. Some notice chewing fatigue with very tough foods during the first weeks. Rarely, an uneven smile can occur if product affects a nearby muscle — careful anatomical placement reduces this risk.

A whole-person approach

Clenching is often tied to stress, sleep quality, and even hormonal shifts such as perimenopause. At JennWell, aesthetic and medical care live under one roof, so jaw tension can be addressed alongside sleep, anxiety and hormonal contributors when relevant.

Preparing for your visit

Coming prepared helps you get the most from an appointment about masseter treatment. Tell us about any dental evaluations, night guards, jaw clicking or locking, and headache patterns. Mention any recent dental work and whether you have had neuromodulator treatment elsewhere. Because full slimming results take six to eight weeks, plan ahead if you are treating before a special occasion. If you have structural jaw joint symptoms, coordinating with your dentist ensures well-rounded care.
